After watching 1080p video on a nice HDTV display, it's hard to go back to watching SD (standard def) videos anymore. With Blu-ray and HD-DVDs coming out, and a few sites starting to use HD cameras for digital porn, it won't be long until we see more HD Idol videos or HD JAV pop up. [A few titles have already been released by Glayz and FantaDream]

Scanlover has always been dedicated to providing high-resolution high-picture quality scans. However, when it comes to video, a lot of emphasis has been on lower-bandwidth, lower-quality files (Divx rips of DVDs to very low quality Realmedia rips). Needless to say, much quality is lost from a DVDISO to a 200meg .rm file.

I know at least some of you enjoy high-resolution and picture quality (e.g. you guys in the Hi-res widescreen wallpaper thread). I'm wondering what your opinions would be on devoting some effort into compiling HD-IV and HD-JAV resources on Scanlover? If not an entire section, perhaps just a thread. I couldn't find an appropriate section to start this thread so I started it here.

I've seen some adult HD clips and a Victoria Secret fashion show in HD and I gotta tell you that watching a blurry idol video just ain't doing it anymore. Let's get the ball rolling folks!

I'll try to update this thread as more links and resources become available.

FAQ

Won't HD video files be too big to download?
- Actually, they wouldn't be. Right now, a lot of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD rips of feature length movies (~2hrs) have been released by groups and encoded using the H264 codec. This compresses the file substantially so that a 720p movie file is around 4.4g to 7g. I've also seen a 50 minute episode of Rome at only 1.08 gigs (the size of our Divx DVD rips!). Since idol videos are all around an hour in length, this would mean a well compressed yet high quality 720p video would be anywhere from 2 to 3 gigs.

Will I be able to burn the files and play the files on my TV?
- You can burn the files, but right now there is no DVD player that will play HD files from a DVD-5 or DVD-9 (standard and dual layer), so they would just be for backup. You can play the files using your computer, and you can output this video to your TV if your video card supports it using a VGA or DVI cable (most decent computers these days do).

Is there a big difference between HD and SD?
- YES! The difference is incredible, especially between SD and 1080. Especially on this forum, the difference between high-res scans and lo-res scans should be something we all are aware of.

The definition of Blue-ray Disc:

A Blu-ray Disc is a high-density optical disc format for the storage of digital media, including high-definition video.

The name Blu-ray is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Because of this shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the common DVD format, which uses a red, 650 nm laser. In comparison to HD DVD, which also uses a blue laser, Blu-ray Disc has more information capacity per layer (currently 25 GB, but test media is up to 33 GB). However Blu-Ray discs are expected to be more expensive than HD-DVD discs, at least initially. Sony has released 50 GB recordable BDs and will soon be releasing 50GB rewritable discs.[1] In August 2006, TDK demonstrated a Blu-ray Disc with a 200 GB capacity.[2]

The Blu-ray Disc is a similar format to PDD, another optical disc format developed by Sony (which has been available since 2004) but offering higher data transfer speeds. PDD was not intended for home video use and was aimed at business data archiving and backup, although currently it is gaining popularity as a HD video format medium and PlayStation 3 medium. The UDO format is aimed at similar purposes. Blu-ray is currently embroiled in a battle format war against the HD-DVD disc.

I haven't been able to google any HDJAV results. Was only able to find a few idol videos in Blu-Ray. I'm guessing they've been released for a while but not to the English JAV sites. If anyone here has some skills in searching in Japanese, some more detective work would be greatly appreciated!

scanlover: While entire HD-DVD and Blu-Ray ISOs would be ridiculously big (HD-DVD is 12 or 24gigs, Blu-Ray is either around 22 or 44), groups have released movies ripped from HDDVD and BD that are reasonably sized.

Full length movies running at 24 fps with widescreen resolution can be compressed to around 4.5 to 7 gigs at around 720p quality using H264 codec. 24 fps is the "movie effect" framerate and idolvideos are generally 30 fps so they would be a little bigger. However, compressed HDIV and HDJAV would be reasonably sized at H264.

I have a P4 2.4 gig, and my computer was unable to play H264 720p video. Well, it played, but it was really choppy.

After downloading and installing CoreAVC (an h264 filter), 720p plays smooth as silk now. It's really amazing how much better the software decoding is and how much resources it frees up.

If you haven't installed CoreAVC, give it a try.

High def stuff is out right now for the computer (just not in the Japanese IV or AV realm). Right now, 720p HD video is around 2-3x more bandwidth intensive. I think that's pretty reasonable.

Just goes to the debate about quality over quantity.

I would be willing to download HD quality videos if I had a faster connection. Not all countries have fast broadband speeds, currently even a lowly 200mb video can take sometimes up to 3-4 hours to download. As someone who cant actually spend that much time downloading, HD is appealing but just a bridge too far. If I had a faster connection though...

I was able to find a bittorrent tracker with a few of the new HD JAV titles. Unfortunately they are raw 1080p transfers, so they are ludicrously sized. If they were converted to 720p h264, they'd be only a fraction of the size.

The second HD JAV is even larger because it's a Blu-Ray disc (24 gig). It's the "Hi-Vision Debut" of Kousa Yuri in 1080p. This is by a company called "Hi-TMA" which has released a few HD vids.

I look forward to the day when more adult videos are being offered in HD-format. I'm an early adopter and have purchased HD-players (both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD) as well as a native 1080p display. I've got one Blu-Ray disc called Bikini Destinations. It's not a porn flick, but it features full nudity.

However, some adult sites have been offering HD content for a while now, so if you want to get a taste of how great HD content can be (in terms of image quality), you can always purchase a subscription and download a few videos. Just keep in mind that some HD videos are compressed so much (to save bandwidth) that the image quality is far from superb, even though the resolution is higher than standard definition (SD).

Also keep in mind that you need a native 1080p display/projector (full HD) to take full advantage of 1080i/1080p material (it doesn't help much if you have a 1080p *capable* display with 720p *native* resolution, since the image will be downsized anyway). 1080p can provide not only superior detail over SD, but also a cleaner and more natural-looking picture with more 'depth'.

I presume it's only a matter of time before we see more JAV in HD-format, although Blu-Ray and HD-DVD still have a long way to go before establishing themselves as a strong alternative to DVD.

Adult HD content have been available for a while now from sites such as MCN Nudes (720p).

Many people with high-speed Internet connections (10 Mb/s or higher) can actually download several gigabytes of data in less than an hour, depending on the transfer rate of their sources. And 10+ Mb connections are becoming cheaper and more common in many countries. If you purchase subscriptions on adult sites you're usually allowed to use download accelerators, which in turn will maximize and sustain your transfer rate (if you download via torrents the speed may vary a lot).

However, the HD dvd and blu ray dics will come first and from there hopefully they take off. HD is so much nicer.

The HD-DVD and Blu-Ray market don't necessarily have to succeed in order for HD formats to become more widespread on adult sites. I think we'll see more and more content being offered in HD over the next few years on adult sites.

If you have a 17" LCD, your display is capable of displaying full HD video. Most 17" LCDs have a native resolution of 1280 x 1024. (Let's not nitpick on these 76 pixels)

You guys might wonder why raw rips were posted. In Japan, it's quite common to have a 100Mbps connection. Fiber rocks. ;)

A 25GB file will take about 40 minutes to transfer.

If you meant bandwidth to be free as in most traffic is contained in Japan, yes, I guess that's true. I have heard of Australia's problems as well. Seeing how they are geographically dispersed and geographically isolated, it will be a long time before that is solved, and even longer if there is no government assistance to prod it along.

This HD thread is appreciated. The file sizes are small anyways. I do look forward to larger file size, x264 encoded files. 720p, even if upscaled, is very good.
