View Full Version : Going to Korea (Again)
That's right, your administrator is travelling to Korea this year. I've been awarded a Freeman Foundation scholarship the other day, and as a result my entire life is about to start changing.
In less than two weeks I will be moving into a place called Tokai Pacific Center. A few days later on the 21st I will begin intensive studies of the Korean language at Kapi'olani Community College. The classes are going to be held 5 days a week, 4-7 hours a day (Fridays are shorter). In one 3-month summer semester I and 6 other students will be covering material equivalent to 4 college courses in Korean.
In August we will be flying to Korea and will dorm at the Kyungpook National University for 4 months until the middle of December. There we will continue language training and will start history and culture classes. There will be excursions to other cities and we are allowed to participate in any extra-curricular activities including clubs. By the end of the 7-month program we each should be able to speak Korean equal to a person who has taken 5-6 college courses in Korean.
All of this is free and we will be given a stipend upon arrival in Korea. They even pay for our food.
I plan to continue administrating this site as usual over the summer, though there will be times when I'm not as active as I am now. Given my experience studying Japanese, I shouldn't need more than 2-3 hours a day to study. There will be an issue of whoever my room mate will be. I don't know if he'll be Japanese or a fellow Freeman peer. It could make or break the convenience of browsing this site. XD
Once I go to Korea I am not sure how often I will be able to log on. Not only will we still have many classes, but there will be trips and I may take up an activity or two. I'll be busy exploring Korea. Not to mention porn is banned and it'll be a huge risk to log in at a university.
I do plan to take lots of photos of stuff, and I plan to upload them to my website for public viewing.
I have two weeks to chillax before my life begins to change.

yay Dyka! I'm happy for you.:bingo: You'll enjoy Korea and make sure you see much of Korea as possible, try to visit Che Ju Island it's beautiful in the summer and also try not to drink too much Soju or Ma cullie (fermented milky colored rice wine) :barf: don't worry there's always mec ju (beer). Yeah porn is frowned upon in Korea :ban: The summer gets very hot over there....infact all four seasons is like pretty extreme there. :XD: Hope you have fun. ::evillaugh: Bring us a suvenir!!!!!!!!!!

Best of luck! Korean women are among the hottest in my opinion (although I like Japanese better, but Korean would be a definite second place)
Please don't forget to take plenty of pictures for us, as we will be anxiously awaiting your return, and periodic news from you while you are over there... when you get a moment... I understand viewing this type of site is not something people are comfortable with over there,so you'll need "alone time" to login periodically...
Other than that, have fun, meet the hotties, take tons of pics, but most important of all... be mindful of your studies and your study schedule... everything else comes in second place. I'm sure you are a great student to have been awarded that scholarship, so don't let it go to waste!
See ya soon!

HAHAHAHAH Dyka you finally get to go to my homeland... well if youre going to be with school and stuff I have some things that you can do to pass time and have fun..
Drilla's Guide to Dyka for Fun in Korea
1) Go to Seoul and visit, Kang Nam Yuk, or Ahp Goo Jung...They are the busiest and livliest places in korea, with the most celebrities and prettiest damn girls!!!! oh believe it I did a study there hahahaah
2) Lee Tae Won, its the only place I can get clothes being a 6'4 korean when I go visit Korea, and there are lots of Americans there with places to shop. You are american so if you miss home you can go to the base and get pizza that taste better than anything you will eat in korea.
3) If you have money and a place to go with extra time take a trip from kim po airport to Jae Ju Island. Its really nice and a hotel I recommend is Lotte, I went there during the Summer and it was beautiful..
4) I dunno what types of food you like but when in Korea since the food is extremely cheap these are some things you can eat that are my favorites and the best made in Korea.
A) DakGgot Chi - Seasoned Chicken on stick usually sold on the streets
b) Sullung Tang - Meat, oxtail soup etc
c) Jam pong- Red Noodle soup
d) Jja Jang Myun - brown sauce noodles
e) Gam Ja Tang- potato meat soup
f) Chik neng myun - since its the summer this cold buckwheat noodle dish is my absolute favorite
g) Sam Gak Kim bap - sold at 7/11 they are triangle rice balls!!!! amazing
h) Dduhk bok gi- Spicy as hell but awesome
I) If you like Ramyun go to a ramyun house and order from hundreds of dishes they are tasty!
Food to avoid- Living in NJ/NY pizza is only good here and don't get it in korea, its sucks!!! along with hamburgers cause they the size of pea.
There is a lot more but you can explore for yourself on what tastes u like the most
5) If you like electronics, depending on where you are when you go into seoul ask to go visit technomart its a huge building with multiple floors with everything technology, anyone in need of mp3, etc this place rocks.
6) Your still not old enough, but I guess In korea you will be fine, ask someone to take you to Room Salon, they have girls hotter than Hyo ri but its gonna cost you over a $1000 to drink and do extra with them.
7) There are many malls there but one interesting thing is midnight shopping at Milgore I think I spelt that wrong but its Nam Dae Moon Shi Jang. its interesting with lots of cheap things.
8) Its hot as fuck in korea like to the point where you want to kill yourself, the humidity is awful, but you can beat that by going to amusement parks/water parks. Try Everland, Lotte World, and Carribean Bay.
9) Unless you are in a busy city like Kang Nam, or Ahp Goo Jung your not gonna see out of this world hotties, there are lots of students and if you are planning to see hotties everywhere you go, you are in for a shock.
10) If you happen to like sushi, sashimi, you can go to various places to eat fresh fish, of course but places like Busan and Dae Goo provide the best even though they are far away from you.
11) If you want to go to MBC which is in Yuido where my aunt lives, she lives right behind MBC studio so you can visit there and stand outside and wait for celebrities ahahahahah, if not tv is everywhere.
12) For video games there is this place in Seoul, I forgot the name Ill get it for you if you want, but I got my ps2 modied there and they have tons of video games and movies, its crazy and cheap, esp video cards, so if you want Ill get you the name.
Other than that everything else is on you man, have fun!!!!!!!!!!! Korea is great, well to me it is cause its my home, and the girls make me smile hahahaha
*****REMEMBER*****
THE HOTTEST GIRLS ARE AT KANG NAM AND AHP GOO JUNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hope this helps you alittle.

Hehe good guide drilla, but I beg to differ on this point. At least when I was in Kurye (which is a small city in South Cholla Province), I saw so many beautiful girls... A bit more country-like, that's for sure, and not as sophisticated as the Seoul girls, but definitely with a more down to earth beauty about them. They might not be scanlover type beauties, but I was blown away anyway... I dunno, maybe I'm partial for those type of simple beauties. :)

hehe I have been to many places like it but I guess I have bad luck at these places, well except for busan there was some hotties....I dunno I have lived in korea and been there over 15 times hhaha and everytime, kang man and ahp goo is the place =)
Well, August is here, my flight is booked, and I'm almost ready for departure to Daegu. Now, I reread your guide, drilla19, and over the summer I've been told by guys and girls alike (even hot girls) that Daegu is loaded with hot girls. Any opinions on that?
Also, my Korean is actually half-decent for my level. I plan to study some more over my short break. I leave on August 21, which is this coming Tuesday.
Lastly, you folks may notice that I have a new avatar and signature right now. This avatar will likely stay the same for the rest of the year unless I get something good going. I'm going to load my flash drive up with Portable Apps, so maybe GIMP will save the day with a new avatar. My signature will change just before I leave. In fact I've already made it, and I'm sure you'll all love it. :P
I got an A in my class, by the way. The 12 credits it was worth brought my GPA up by 0.38 points. 15 more this year! But in the fall it's 3 classes (9, 3, 3) instead of one.
I bet a lot of you forgot I was even going. :god:

sam gyup sal is also good to eat
what sucks about korean girls these days is that a lot of them have had surgery.
if that doesn't bother you, you're gonna love korea!
if you ever do go to jeju island, the seafood is really fresh there too
have fun!
From reading all this, appears that you are not going to North Korea, interesting place from what I read, the Kims enjoy god like status up there in the so called "workers paradise". Maybe you can get some "ader booze" in South Korea...its the one with the dead snake in it...

I can't help you if she's Korean, but if she's Japanese:
Japanese girls have three types of boyfriends.
1) The one she's serious about
2) The one she hangs out with
3) The one she calls when she needs a ride
So "She's got a boyfriend" isn't a problem. ;-)
Enjoy your trip! Lucky you!
Ah, great. We can meet up sometime then.. :)
Watch out taking pictures though. There are many places you aren't allowed to do so (department stores, swimming pools, etc)

3) The one she calls when she needs a ride
So "She's got a boyfriend" isn't a problem. ;-)
The first two usually mean that other guys have no chance unless the girl feels like cheating on her man or lowering the possibility of having her "hang-out boyfriend" advance into a serious relationship should he find out. The third one isn't even a boyfriend. o_O
Her boyfriend may be in Japan, but you'd be surprised at how dedicated a Japanese person can be to a relationship sometimes. To an American she is single, but to a Japanese she is still taken.

If I have time you can try to meet me. I'll be busy with school, tae kwon do, and general studying. :P
Also, taking pictures won't be an issue for me. I'm not a tourer; I take photos I'll actually enjoy looking at later. Pictures of buildings only keep me entertained for so long.
Thats good then. I on the other hand.. have a bad fetish with buildings... ;)
So if your learning Korean, we should converse in Korean since I'm studying it too.. ;) Is there somewhere we can use Hangul without getting the English only slap?
No because then the stupid vBulletin will just cut us off. =(

The nice thing about that is Japanese can have friends of the opposite sex without all the usual jealousy crap.
The third one isn't even a boyfriend. o_O
Yeah. No one ever respects you for kissing their ass, but he could at least fit a taxi-meter and charge her. I could respect that.

Thanks Bro. Happy for you. I spent a lot of time in Japan. I went when I was 13. for the entire summer with my uncle whom worked over there. We traveled around the country extensively and really saw the culture as it was for so many centuries. Especially in the northern most parts. It was sooooo amazing. I returned 3 separate times while in the military. Living in Okinawa for 1 year (1992), Sasebo for 1 year (1996) and Tokyo for 1 year (1998). I returned for vacation at least 14 times since. I almost took a 3 yr rotation but decided not too and just went back to school for my MBA. I lived in Suginami for a while. It is basically about 20 minutes outside of Shinjuku on the Keio line. The Nishi-eifuku station to be exact. Are you familiar?
Nope, I actually only spent about 10 minutes in Shinjuku; I was changing trains. :god:
I find traditional Japanese culture to be more interesting than modern culture. Shrines and temples will always be boring though. Once you see one you've seen them all. Oooo I'm so original.
Hi guys. I really must apologize for never actually posting any pictures of my stay last year. I suppose now that this thread is in a traveler's section I am forced to do so, or at least obligated to. So without further ado, here are pictures! (Please note that I am not a sightseer so, much like my trip to Japan, points of interest are lacking.)
1 - A brick as I found it on a sidewalk near my campus. Uneven sidewalks are a very distinctive feature of Korea, I found. It's interesting to note that most Koreans do not realize this. This brick happened to be the most extreme example.
2 - I call this the Fake Diamond Head shot because it looks like a leveled volcano in the future with housing built on it. Look at various pictures of Waikiki beach for a comparison. This was taken in Pusan, by the way. I can never remember the name of this beach.
3 - A bridge and small pond on the Kyungpook campus.
4 - Another landmark in Pusan, a structure covered in flowers.
5 - A street near KNU and another university campus. I think it was "Summer University" or something, but none of my Korean friends seemed to know of it. I must be mistakened?
1, 2, 3 - A three-colored Italian restaurant in one of the Lotte buildings in downtown Daegu. They served some fantastic dishes, let me tell you. Italian food is very popular in Korea.
4 - A mermaid statue in the Pusan beach. Only me and one classmate had the courage to jump the rocks to get to this statue, and only I had the nerves to get into the right position to take such a shot. I suppose flexibility is good for photography too, eh? :god:
5 - One of the entrances to Woobang Towerland in Daegu. It looks like the main entrance, but to be honest I don't know. There was this one, one at the top of a small mountain (a video of it is somewhere on Youtube if you know where to look), one at the entrance of the property, and a third next to the one at the top of the small mountain. Who knows if there is a fifth.
1, 2, 3, 4 - Various pictures taken at Kyungbok Palace.
5 - Somewhere inside the museum next to Kyungbok Palace. The words say "sori," which means "sound."
1 - Some statue and mountain on the way to Kyungbok Palace. I don't rememebr the names of these things but I got as close as was allowed for photography.
2 - The structure that sits atop and next to the museum mentioned in the previous post.
3 - One of the very few things I found genuinely interesting in the COEX aquarium. My brother has a salt water aquarium so I honestly rushed through this long maze of a tourist attraction to go find a Pump It Up machine.
4 - A river in Seoul. I don't remember the name of it. :god:
5 - Under a bridge at the river. See that girl? She and her friend were high schoolers hiding from the public eye because they were smoking. It's looked down upon in Korea for females to smoke in public, so just imagine how it'd look for two teenage girls to do it.
1 - This is the photo one of my avatars came from. Me and some classmates were on the way to Shincheon to go clubbing.
2 - I think this was the same subway but I don't remember.
3 - Vultures on campus. :D
4 - Me declaring my platform for the recent Korean election. Obviously I didn't win.
5 - My first time on a see-saw and I came up with this idea for a picture I am a genius wowowow.
Ok that's all for the pictures I hope you enjoyed them! More to come in December.

If you talk to Dyka online, then you should surely know that he's becoming Korean, so in that case, no I don't think he's gonna be tired of it until he visits as many times as you did Dee. :evillaugh: Korea seems really cool, and the fact that I like to pop and dance. For some reason I am more interested in Korea than Japan now, and I have been to neither of the countries yet. I plan on visiting a lot of places once I get certification in A.O.S next year.

Hey before I go Lustor! I wanted to mention to you that yesterday when I was hanging out with a bunch of Hakuoh University students that one of them looked EXACTLY LIKE our dream girl. The only difference was that this girl was slightly smaller. I have no picture, but you only have to look at our dream girl to know what this university student looked like. It was literally shocking.
Also bye everybody. :god:
WOW so I'm a busy sumbitch here in good ol' Korea. But rather than spend time discussing what I've been doing (studying and beatboxing) how about I mention something COOLER?
I said I'll return on December 24. I am indeed returning for the spring semester starting in March, but there's a catch. Something that is fairly recent news for me.
I will be flying back to Korea at the very end of December or on January 1st. That means I'll have an extra 2 months to play around here and study Korean. That means I'll only be in Hawaii for about a week. Goodness sakes! :god:
I hope you guys can last so long without me around all the time!

Man, reading this thread sure made me miss Korea. I was there for two years. Of course it was 97-99. I have always wanted to go back, but just kept putting it off. I am going to work hard so I can go back. I even got in contact with one of the KATUSA's i knew in the army again recently and he just got back to Seoul.
So, it looks like I have a goal to hit, but it may not be til next year as my wife and I are looking at buying a house (it's so cheap now, our monthly payments will be less than our apartment rent!). But I always reflect fondly of the times I spent there.
Hope all goes well Dyka, I went to Daegu for about a week when I was there, but don't remember too much (was dating a girl from there when I was in Seoul and she would come up on the weekends).
But I do miss Seoul. I used to have an apartment about 2 blocks from the Bk in Itaewon.
Well, I was never in Korea 10 years ago, but hopefully the two years you spent there were enough to show you that Korea's appearance can change fast. So when you make a trip up here, expect everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, to look different. Even my favorite place in Daegu from last year has a slightly different appearance after only one year of being gone. It's incredible.

Oh yeah, I have been reading some ESL forums about Korea and things have changed so much. I probably wont recognize it, but I am sure I will still appreciate it. I do miss the fun times I had there. I need to practice my Korean again, it's gotten rusty. Although watching K-drama's has helped refresh a little.
I am an asshole for being so late in posting more pictures. :god:
1 - A place that sold both COFFEE and HIGH HEELS. Unfortunately it closed down a few months after this picture was taken.
2 - A lucky shot I got on my very first morning on campus.
3 - Pink pickles and cabbage that USED to be served at a FORMERLY kickass Italian restaurant in Kangnam. Now there are no more pickles, they stopped serving the salad appetizer, prices went slightly up, and they don't serve dessert for free anymore.
4 - A drinking spot in Incheon called "Gigas."
5 - Another picture of it. $16 and you've got dinner for 3 AND some alcohol. There are several plasma TVs hanging on walls that you can't see in the pictures.
1 - My favorite picture of autumn that I took. There were cherry blossoms on campus too but I couldn't find any opportunities for good pictures. Other places in Korea have some GREAT pictures but I've seen very few of my campus.
2 - Unofficial advertisement for a billiards hall in a little alley. The whole wall used to be covered in them until my club tagged it with everyone's names.
3 - Another naked woman statue. This one was at the entrance to Nami Island.
4 - A squirrel native to Korea. I like to call them Don King squirrels.
5 - Same squirrel.
1 - Me on top of a small hill next to the dorms. This was the beginning of a 4-hour trek in the early days of winter with no gloves. I only expected to be up there for about 20 minutes but noooooooo life is full of surprises and I found a path.
2 - I forget when I took this picture but it was part of the trek.
3 - My second favorite picture from the trek. My favorite is the one with me in it. NOT because I'm in it, mind you...
4 - Power tower!
5 - Something like 3 hours in I found a house with a couple log warehouses. Does anybody know why all the logs are dotted?
1 - The last picture I took on my trek. I had to walk along a freeway to get here. My campus is about a hundred feet away.
2 - I went on Google Earth and tried to map the distance covered. It took me 4 hours because I was taking so many pictures and walking slow. There were a couple hills I went up that would have been a real bitch to climb down, so I eventually didn't really have a choice but to keep going. "S" is where I started, "F" is where I finished. That "A" is the main entrance to my campus. I can only guess at one spot in that big egg where I actually was but I can't be sure since there's nothing in the landscape for me to pinpoint it so I didn't bother marking it. The lone line at the bottom is where I stopped and walked back because my hands were getting cold and the path finally became extremely vague. Actually it got kind of steep and dangerous looking. The picture of the logs was taken at that straight-ish line right after I walked back some.
3 - Picture of someone who went with us on a trip to Jeju Island. Halla Mountain is in the background. I never got to go there. =(
4 - A picture I took somewhere else on Jeju.
5 - A warning tag on the back of the chairs in the dorm.
1 - Best picture I got of winter, fresh after the cold snap that got the whole country. 6 inches of snow in my area. Highest in the nation. By the way my friends call me the human tripod because I can take pictures in the dark with little to no blurring. :god:
2 - The last picture I took from the window of my dorm. I took a picture every few weeks at the same angle starting from my first morning and going to my last week so I could sort of document the seasons. I ended with 15 acceptable pictures. This is the best one, but it's too bad I couldn't have gotten one or two of July and early August to complete the year. I wish I took one every morning so I could do one of those time-lapse videos.
So yeah that was my 10 months. These are the only pictures I'm going to upload even though there's plenty more. You only get to see what I think are the best I took. I had a good time. Better than when I was in Daegu.
I'll be going back in 2 years. So expect new pictures in the distant future. I doubt I'll have all that many though since I'll be in the urban jungle of Seoul and I've done all the sight-seeing I feel like doing. Maybe I'll get pictures of some of the college campuses next time. Kyunghee is beautiful and I wish I had time to take pictures when I was there.

mm ive been there and here are some tips if your lonely. suwon or shinyongsam? near samgakji right next to ipark mall you'll see ladies lined up for 60-70$ should be able to get in. i dont know how much they charge foreigners but thats how much i paid. and also if you have korean friends they should know call girls there more expensive. or if you want to get a girl the hard way go to a clubs basically in hongdae area and such but imo korean girls at the club are used and abused so might as well make life easier and just pay for it cause either way your going to spend money in the club as well. l and have fun! i gotta say damn korean girls have been around so dont feel bad for a one night stand. korean porn isnt publicized like other countries, but in the end there just like other countries or worse. IMO
