According to the Record Industry Association of Japan's 2007 report, in Japan, more than double the number of people use WinMX to share adult files than any other peer-to-peer file-sharing client. You can share all your videos on WinMX at once, so the range of JAV available is much wider than BitTorrent, Rapidshare or eMule. Files tend to remain available for years at a time without the need to make special requests for users to reseed. Because there are so many sources for each file, you can complete your downloads easily and quickly. The ability to search by hash means that you do not have to be able to read Japanese file names to download files, and you can find other copies of the same file even when the file has been renamed. Another feature is that you can view incomplete video files from start to end, just by clicking on them.

WinMX runs on most versions of Microsoft Windows, and there are versions available for Linux. To start, go to

WinMX ConEx (http://patch.winmxconex.com/)

and download the latest version (3.54 Patched).

If you are using a firewall, you will need to add WinMX to the list of programs with access to the internet and/or open up a couple of ports, so that traffic can get through. In WinMX, you can change the port numbers by clicking on Settings, and then Incoming TCP Connections and In/Out UDP Packets under Internet Connections. For each port choose a number in the 10000-65000 range. If you are using the Windows XP SP2 firewall, click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Windows Firewall, Exceptions and then Add Port, ie. the same numbers as listed in WinMX.

It is a good idea to share a large number of files similar to what you are looking for because users may have MX Monitor set only to upload to users with some minimum number of files or may be browsing your library looking to trade. To add your shares, click on the Library tab on the top left hand side. Then click on "Add folder," navigate to the folder where your completed videos are stored, and hit OK. Choose which file types to add, tick "Include Sub-Folders" if you have any, and then hit OK. Traders and MX Monitor users don't like it if you share the folder with your incomplete files, although beginners tend to do this. Under Settings - Library, you can create new file types or edit existing ones. I have one called "Video (.avi .mov .mpg .mpeg .wmv)" and one called "Other Video (.asf .flv .ram .rm .swf). It is a good idea to label your files with a tag at the beginning telling the genre eg. (Asian), (AV), (IV), (mp3), (movie), (PV), (TV). If you can type Japanese, include the Japanese title. For western users, I usually include the product code to make the video easier to find. Also if a video is new, you might want to include the release date to highlight this, eg. 2008.2.5.

Once you are online, click on the Search tab. Under 'Artist and / or Title,' there are two empty text boxes, one above the other. In the top box, you can type in your favourite Japanese search terms, eg. an actress's name in kanji or some genre of video. Make sure that the button left of "Search in a New Window" is set to "Any File / Bitrate" or "Video" and not "MP3 Audio."

The box underneath that is for hash values, a long series of numbers and letters that uniquely identifies each video or mp3. For SLF users who don't read Japanese, just copy the hash value I post (including the 'HASH>' part) into the lower search box, click on 'Search,' and the relevant video should turn up. Right click on it, and choose 'Download,' and then follow your progress in the Transfers window.

There are various ways to try to speed up your downloads. One of the best ways is to find another user who wants to trade files with you, tell each other what number you are in the queue, and then start each other. Browse the files of users who you are uploading to to see if they have anything you want.

If you are in the transfers window sitting in someone's queue and not downloading, you can right click on the file, and choose "Search for Alternates" to find other sources which may have shorter queues.

For files not even in queue, you can set Auto Find Sources to 10 minutes, and Auto Enter Queue to 100, and then WinMX will automatically go looking for other sources. If a queue is longer than 100 you may want to right click the file, and Enter Remote Queue anyway. If you try to download two files from the same user the second one gets Queued Locally, but you can right click on the file, and choose Start Transfer.

Vladd44 runs a useful WinMX help site (http://www.vladd44.com/mx/), or you can ask questions in the WinMX World Forum (http://www.winmxworld.com/forum2/). WinMX World also has a useful chatroom once you get connected.

To view Japanese in WinMX in XP, under Settings, Control Panel, Regional and Language Settings, you may have to extend support for advanced text services to all programs, and set Japanese as your language for non-Unicode programs. Windows 2000 and probably Vista have similar settings. After this in Windows Explorer dialogs, back slashes will appear as yen marks, and you will have to switch back to English when installing new programs. Some people recommend using Microsoft's free AppLocale program (http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/apploc.mspx) which allows you to change code pages on the fly without having to fiddle with Regional Settings.

Vista users: You may need to set Vista to Win98 compatibility mode to get WinMX working. Read this thread (http://www.winmxworld.com/forum2/index.php/topic,4317.0.html) to learn how. Also I've heard that creating an incoming folder directly under your C: drive will make it easier to rename files.

Edit Jan. 7, 2008: I am uploading a list of JAV-related keywords with their Japanese equivalents in romanization and chinese characters (kanji), so that you can use these words to search. It is a text file encoded in Unicode, and zipped with Winrar.

Underneath the search blanks, there is a button marked "MP3 Audio." You have to change this to "Any File/Bitrate" or "Video" if you want to search for videos. You can also change the default value under Settings - Search. This is probably the most common mistake newbies make with WinMX.

How many sources does the file have? If you're getting more than ten sources, the video will come down soon enough. If fewer, you will need to share as many videos of the same genre as possible, preferably labeled in Japanese. Big traders with rare files use MX Monitor to set a minimum number of shared files, and they may be looking for new or rarer videos that you can offer in exchange.

Try disconnecting, and then reconnecting. If that doesn't help, try opening the TCP and UDP ports listed in WinMX Settings - Internet Connection in your firewall and/or router, and then make a primary connection. If that does not work, you could try portforwarding. Also if you have a cheap router, you could try connecting your modem directly, and see if that makes a difference.
