View Full Version : Playboy Indonesia - Release And Backlash
A toned-down edition of Playboy magazine went on sale Friday in Indonesia, defying threats of protests by Islamic hardliners in the world's most populous Muslim nation. The first edition's most graphic photos - female models in under garments - appeared no more risque than those in other magazines already for sale in the country.
More explicit photos appear daily in local tabloids. Indonesian versions of Western magazines FHM and Maxim, which also contain photos of women in underwear, are already on sale. Pornographic VCDs, though illegal, are sold more or less openly at markets all over the country.
As well as two photo spreads of partially clothed women, the first edition includes an interview with internationally renowned Indonesian author Pramoedya Ananta Toer, and articles on East Timor after its break from Jakarta-rule in 1999 and the development of Indonesian cartoons.
The magazine costs around $5 (€3.5), more than twice the minimum daily wage in Jakarta, but affordable to many middle- and upper-class city dwellers.
Andhara Early is Indonesia’s first playmate of the month.
 A group of Muslims protesting Playboy's decision to launch an Indonesian edition of the magazine clashed with police Wednesday and stoned the company's editorial offices, witnesses said. No one was injured in the protest involving around 150 members of the Islamic Defenders' Front, a small group with a history of attacking bars and nightclubs, as well as Western embassies. The protesters smashed several windows and the door and gate at the magazine's offices in south Jakarta, witnesses said. Several were seen scuffling with police officers guarding the building. Playboy's first local edition in a Muslim country went on sale Friday.

Kinda reminds me of the 60's when American Women were out protesting against Playboy...
(Yes... I remember the 60's all too well... :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: )
Hey, that would be a cool thing to get. It would be like getting the first issue of 'Playboy' when it was first released. Thinking of which, I sure do miss the older issues of 'Playboy'. Back then it seemed more of an art. Back then I would have been interested in modeling for 'Playboy' as well. But now it seems more about sex rather than the beauty of the woman. Oh well, guess times are changing..

Been to Indonesia (Jakarta) many times and have always been amazed and amused and bewildered by the hypocracy of these "morality" protests. The media loves to report on the demonstrations and quote the same old hard line clerics, but the fact is the protests are generally small in numbers, never last more than a few days before something new comes up to protest about and 99% of the people couldn't give a damn about the protesters except that they tie up traffic during rush hour!
Open any local fashion magazine, there are many, and you see provacative photos of beautiful Indo women. The TV is filled with sexy women in short skirts and cleavage. Illegal porn VCD's are everywhere for sale on the streets. The fact is the Indonesian people are a very modest but tolerant people. Indonesia is 220 million people...the public demonstrations (including the one's in front of US Embassy) usually include a few hundred, but make the newspapers for days.
The people are mostly uneducated and easily manipulated. The moderate politicians are scared to death of the Islamic Right. When the Clerics ask for something to be banned, i.e., anything Western (read Corrupt), the politicians ban it without question. The politician knows that if he rebuffs the wishes of the Cleric, he will be drummed out of office, and political office is the golden staircase to wealth in Indonesia.
I hope to be able to see the new Indo Playboy, because as Crys said, it would be similar to the old American versiom, where the beauty of the women was enough and the sexuality was more senual than erotic.

I think these ppl have too much of the "V for Vendetta" movie.
Anyway ...i think this is just another reason made by this "group-of-ppl" to hate some other parties/groups or nations.
Needless to say ...WHEN THERE IS A WILL ...THERE IS A WAY...

Just wondering, if anybody has been to Indonesia and get to see with their own eyes what kind of picture they are publishing ? is it only a bikini or lingerie?? or a totally nude picture ?? Pls let me know. I've been away from indo for many years so never got chance to go back.
Sometimes i'm really hate to see my own country doing things that is unecessary. Complaining no playboy magazine allowed, but many porn VCDs, prostitution, and internet stall which u can see nude pic for much cheaper rate.
I think it's lingerie for now, from what I've read. Haven't picked up a copy yet though. If you really want to see a copy, I'm sure you can find it on EBay by now.
