And by the looks of this place that probably means all of you. :) (jk, I really do like it here).

So here's a very free and useful tool I keep on my computer, it called Cryptainer. It stores files and encrypts them for you for extra privacy. You create your own password to get in and no one can view your files with out it. It also disguses it's self as a hard drive mechanism rather than a software program. Very sneaky. I saw it on G4 AOTS and thought it was brilliant. Check it out, I know it will come in handy.

I was wondering if you meant goodies or "goodies", I see now that it's the latter. :)

Why would this be in Idle Chatter? This looks like an "Interesting News, Web Links" candidate to me ... ::/:

I had that same problem. I had it in my computer before, then deleted it thinking I really don't need it that much. I ended up reinstalling it and now I just use it all the time.

It's not free, you'll have to.... buy it... yeah... It has a 30 day trial. There's always File and Folder Protector 2.5 (http://www.download.com/File-and-Folder-Protector/3000-2092_4-10538189.html?tag=lst-0-3). It's free to try but has no limitations apparently, including no cut off date.

It's all good. The free version is small, like you said. It's good for people that don't have alot of stuff to keep hidden, not so much for a person with alot to hide. :)
They have a full version that you can purchase that stores alot more for about $20.00 US, but I don't need alot of space... just a little.

if you are using windows xp you can keep your files and photos private.
just right click on the folder or document you want to keep private. then click on properties... then sharing, then click on make this folder private then it's going to ask you for a password. that's it... the good thing about softwares is it automated and makes it more difficult to open... thanks for the software link I still might try it out to see how it works because of the encyption features are a nice add on.

@Mike. I know what you mean, i've seen it before, but only on the My Documents folder and that was after a fresh install. I can't find it now and it doesn't apprear to be on any of the Sharing and Security tabs for any other file or folder.

On another note, you can set up user permissions through the Security tab on Properties and deny read access to certain users. Of course, if you don't know what you're poking around with you might find yourself locked out of your porn stash, and that's just not good :grinno:

Rikjs you are right about locking yourself out, just be very carful when tweaking with your folders...once it's gone it's bye bye to all those photos in your collection even those videos... just burn it soon as possible and always back up to dvd or cd...then even if you delete it you still have a burnt copy...happy collecting  thanks for pointing that out Rikjs, you must have locked yourself out before did you?

I've locked myself out of the command prompt once using gpedit... fortunately it was a test computer and not mine and it was pretty easy to get it back up again.. just re-enable it in gpedit, but I can see someone locking themselves out of something serious like the C:\ drive :P

Mike has it, burn it to a dvd and hide it somewhere. Probably the easiest and best way to keep your stuff safe.

I have XP, cool I didn't think I could do that with the properties. But on the downside, it really would suck being locked out of my porn collection.

I don't keep a ton of stuff in my comp, but I think I'll try it out just incase. Thanks, joining this forum makes me want to collect more stuff... for my research on the female anatomy.

Personally I think the best commercial option is to use BestCrypt (+BCWipe), this due to the ability of generating a random swapfile(virtual memory) encryption key at boot, which means there is no way to recover stuff in swapfile after a reboot. For a free alternative, I would go with the opensource TrueCrypt. None of these are available for Mac however, I believe.

I really don't see why operating systems don't have these features built in by default, but I guess they will come with them sooner or later. I think a computer should be like an extension of your brain, no one should be able to access the data in it but yourself (at least not YOUR PERSONAL files). Not unless they have the key at least.

Windows however, is set by default to track your moves in all ways possible, takes alot of setup to get it to stop doing those things which is really annoying.

I might be paranoid, but I have personal projects, files, passwords, emails etc. that I absolutely don't want leaked onto the net or anywhere else, so I really try to be as careful as I can. Using routers, software firewalls, antiviruses and other network monitoring tools is also recommended of course.
