Depends where you're staying/working in London, although the Tube will get you from one end to the other in 20 or so minutes if you're within Zones 1-3.

Places to go... well, Covent Garden. You'll find a few bars and places to eat around there. Then there is Leicester Square a little further up well within walking distance offering the pretty much the same and this is also where all the UK film premieres take place.

Towards the other the east end, Tower Bridge. Get on the District Line on the Tube to Tower Hill, cross Tower Bridge from there and head towards the HMS Belfast. There is a number of good bars along the embankment there as well as this excellent Indian restaurant too, The Bangal Clipper if I remember correctly.

Northeast from there towards (back across the Thames) is Whitechapel, there you'll find Brick Lane which is also known as the Curry Mile so no prizes for guessing what you'll find there.

Don't know the westend of London too well towards Bayswater and Paddington though but the last time I was there (around end of Oct 2009) I went around those places I've suggested. Hopefully I'll be back that way myself toward the end of May.

If you got time, try doing the Circle. Get on the Circle Line on the Tube, get off every stop for a pint, 20 stops I think so 20 pints and it will take most of the day!!!

Cheers :)

try Soho for food and drink and fun (yes, it's still lively of a sort, even after all these years - but beware of clip joints and other tawdriness)

or if you want to meet well heeled ladies, try Sloane Square area - or, nearby, around South Kensington tube station (on the Circle Line) there is a collection of French eateries etc., as the French embassy and Lycee Francais CdeG are there (tasty teachers, of course!)

the area north of the City (main financial district) - Clerkenwell/Spitalfields/Hoxton - is supposed to be trendy - it has many 'cool' bars and nightclubs with a younger clientele

Cool. Might have to try and find myself going that way next time I'm down there. Being a typical London tourist I'll take my directions via the Tube so that's Shoreditch, Angel and Old Street being the closest?

Cheers :)

Thank you for your advices ! I didn't get too much time (only 3 days, with work).
I forgot to tell you that I was staying in Hammersmith, so not exactly at the places you recommended. I went to Leicester Square the first evening actually before posting here.

I think I will have to come back to try that Circle thing. But honestly, I would go for 1/2 pints at each station or I may very well die before I finish it, wouldn't that be a shame ? :D

I've been to a place called "Fire station" in Hammersmith, it was nice but almost empty (on a Thursday evening). I've had delicious ribs and 2 pints of "the local beer you have available, please".
Well, the reputation of England in France is that there is a bad weather and bad food, I had a wonderful sun for all my 3 days (luck ?) and pretty good food.

People seemed more polite than the average Parisian (well, it's not too difficult to achieve). I was shocked by the amount of expensive cars I saw in Hammersmith...

Take her to a fucking football match before the season's through. You have about one week.

I might be heading down that way in a fortnight so I'll try the Sloane Square and Spitalfields area of the city.

Cheers :)
