What's going on? The great celebrity cull of 2009?

Former "Charlie's Angel" Farrah Fawcett died today at age 62 after a long struggle with anal cancer. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, Fawcett dropped out of college after being voted one of the 10 most attractive women on campus, then turned success in toothpaste and shampoo adverts into an acting career.

As Jill Munroe in Charlie's Angels, the essential premise of Aaron Spelling's show could be summed up, in entertainment writer Jim Slotek's words, as "beautiful girls fight crime in tight T-shirts". Charlie's Angels was so popular that at one stage 59% of America's TV audience was said to tune in – a feat for a show featuring three female private detectives whose main talent was the ability to wield a gun while shouting, "Freeze, turkey!"

Fawcett appeared well aware of what made the show an instant hit: "When the show was number three, figured it was our acting. When it got to be number one, I decided it could only be because none of us was wearing a bra."

Although Farrah Fawcett didn't do anything notable outside her acting career, she seemed a decent normal person despite her celebrity. Too bad Wacko Jacko will get all the attention.

Fawcett died of Anal cancer, a rare malignancy that starts in the anus -- the opening at the end of the rectum.

Most anal cancers are diagnosed in people who are between 50 and 80. Before age 50, anal cancer is more common in men, but after age 50 it is slightly more common in women.

Anal infection with human papillomavirus ( HPV) is a major risk factor for the cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, 85% of anal cancers are associated with persistent infection with the sexually transmitted virus.

There can be no symptoms associated with anal cancer, but in about half of patients bleeding occurs and is often the first sign of the disease. Because anal itching can also be a symptom of the cancer, many people initially attribute their bleeding and itching to hemorrhoids: "Any time people have symptoms, they need to get it checked out even if they think they know what it is, Anal cancer is rare, so it is not on many people's radar screens."

Other signs and symptoms of anal cancer can include pain or pressure in the anal area, Unusual discharges from the anus, Lump near the anus or a change in bowel habits.

Keep it in proportion. You're more likely to die from heart disease and/or lung cancer.

What a day... Two celebrities passed away. Just a couple days ago, I still saw her on TV coming back from a foreign hospital. Clearly, Michael Jackson's dead overshadows Farrah Fawcett's in media coverage.

Hope they both rest in peace.

It's a real shame that this has been a R.I.P. year w/ three dead already. RIP to the trio. If only Michael Jackson didn't tarnish his career by doing stupid allegations like the neverland ranch.

WTF? Too many celebs in one week for me. I had NO clue she had cancer for 3 years! :( I suspected something was up when I watched a recent interview, her voice was ragged and she seemed tired. She was stunning and quite a nice actress.
