Have a question. I used to own a version of RealPlayer before I formatted my computer end of last year, which allowed me to create multiple screenshots of a movie by specifying 4x5 or 4x6, etc. Shortcut was Ctrl+Shift+N (I think). But after installing Realplayer 15, I realized the shortcut key does not work. And I tried all other combinations too. I even tried to search for 'preferences' where it used to list down various shortcut keys but I was not able to locate too. It has been a very convenient tool for me. Would like to find which version of RP that allows this function.

Anybody can advise? Thanks.
Use Media Player Classic, it has quite good settings to set up your video thumbnails. It works with a lot of videos, as long as you have proper codecs installed.

In menu screen: File > Save Thumbnail

SMPlayer (free) also has a nice preview/strip making feature.

You can set columns and rows, aspect ratio, max image width, skip "x" number of seconds from start of video, frame timestamps on or off, and save the strip as jpg or png.

While I don't have an "Real" files handy to test, it has .rm and .ram listed, and on the webpage for it's "backend" mplayer (included with smplayer), it has "RealAudio/RealVideo format" listed as supported (and "RealVideo 1.0, 2.0 (G2) RealVideo 3.0 (RP8), 4.0 (RP9)") codecs listed.

Not to mention it's an all around excellent video player, so even if you didn't exactly need Real video support; but just happen to use RealPlayer by default for other video types, then smplayer should fill any video playing needs nicely.

VLC is another well-regarded free video player that I believe makes previews and plays Real files.

Hmmm not exactly what I was looking for in responses. Thanks anyway. Just forgot to mention, its not just Real Media files that I wanted to create the screenshots for, but mostly AVI files. Some of the torrents have examples of those screenshots (too huge - 10x4)

Media Player Classic - Downloaded and played but no picture, only sound. Could be due to codec but I have installed K-Lite.

VLC - Snapshot yes, but multiple screenshots (e.g. 4x4) in a picture no.

Again, I remembered there was the option (and the hotkey) to do it in Real Player, but I cant find it in RP 15. I googled and it seems there isnt any webpage to say how to do it. I remembered there is a list of hotkeys you can call out within RP (preferences maybe), but even that has disappeared. I suspect the earlier versions of RP have what I am looking for, but dont think I want to install each earlier version to test out :(

smplayer makes nice preview strips, easily. Also is great for playing avi's (as are many players). It's been my "main" player for some time.

I'm curious why you did not try it (because, out of the those players mentioned itt, it's the one that had it's preview strip-making features described in detail)?

You don't need K-Lite codec pack: MPC-HC (it's more advanced version) plus ffdshow or LAV filters.
With such combo you shouldn't have problem with 99 percent of video files.

Btw, Real Player it's a real crap - you should avoid it like a plague.

Never heard of smplayer. But I use VLC player 99.9% of the time. Heck, I dont even need to install any codecs for VLC!

Yeah, I found MPC-HC and works like a treat. Realplayer is used for playing of my music nowadays, as I seem to get rather bad quality music using foobar. Haven't yet worked out why, but not sure how I should tweak equalizer settings (chinese music sounds especially bad in foobar, but is ok via Realplayer - separate issue anyway!)

Gotcha. There was a time when I had not heard of it either. Nor heard of VLC or RealPlayer.

It's a good player. Also it is open source; so there is at least one "fork" of the project; it sounds pretty decent, but smplayer does everything I want so I haven't tried it. There is a portable version as well. I don't recall if I had to install codecs or not.

Sounds like you found a solution. Cool!

You're not missing anything ... those links are probably dead ... especially Megaupload, they're shut down.
