The gubment be all up in your communications

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7463333.stm

I saw this shit the other day and I couldn't believe it. Sweden just approved a measure that allows their intelligence bureau to monitor international communication without a warrant and without any checks and balances for national security. Then I saw this on Bush wiretapping which is a measure that would give companies who've cooperated with the Bush administration immunity from any lawsuits that may come about from the administration's warrantless wiretapping.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/06/...aps/index.html

This is troubling for several reasons. For one, what's going on in Sweden that the government needs to monitor international communication without a warrant? Are they in some impending danger that I don't know about? Is the crime so bad in Sweden that the government needs such a measure?

Secondly, when did getting a warrant become such a hassle that government has to circumvent the process of getting one and any checks and balances? The thing with the Bush wiretapping is that the FISA court was already in place and if a time-sensitive wiretap was needed, the government could conduct a wiretap for 3 days before a warrant is needed. But instead of getting the laws changed if they were needed to be to better fight terrorism, the Bush administration just circumvented everything that was put in place and conducted their own warrantless wiretaps and gave the excuse that it was done to fight terrorism without getting the laws changed.

Lastly, if the government was doing things on the up and up, then why do companies need immunity from lawsuits? It's not like the government would place a tap on a completely innocent person right? Just like the government wouldn't kidnap a completely innocent person, fly them secretively to a clandestine prison in Eastern Europe to be tortured for a few years and then later released after realizing that they kidnapped the wrong person.

When the U.S. invaded Iraq, the rules changed and have been using the guise of fighting terrorism to encroatch on some of our freedoms and to do things outside the Constitution. And with this measure that took place in Sweden, other countries may follow suit and enact similar measures. That's what worries me.

If the government were catching terrorists like hotcakes, then I wouldn't have much of a problem, but I have yet to see a terrorist that was captured via warrantless wiretapping. Plus the terrorists in Afghanistan have regained strength. Anyway, just be on the lookout for measures that the government puts in place that takes away freedom and or removes any checks and balances from the process of what they are trying to do.
